WHY DO I NEED ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?
A thorough examination will be performed by Dr. LeCheminant to determine whether or not you can benefit from endodontic treatment. If the pulp of the tooth is inflamed or infected with bacteria, it can become painful and cause an abscess. Root canal treatment cures and prevents these symptoms. If the tooth has previously had root canal treatment but is not healing properly, endodontic retreatment can correct the problem and promote healing.
HOW DOES ROOT CANAL TREATMENT WORK?
Endodontic treatment removes the inflamed or infected area from the tooth, thus eliminating the source of pain.
WHAT IS DONE TO THE TOOTH?
After the area is anesthetized, a small opening is made in the tooth. Through this opening, the diseased part of the tooth is removed, and the tooth is disinfected. In the final step, the roots are sealed to prevent re-infection.
ARE X-RAYS TAKEN?
Yes, radiographs (x-rays) are necessary to allow Dr. LeCheminant to properly diagnose the problem and to accurately measure the tooth in preparing it for the root canal filling. We use state-of-the-art digital radiographs to minimize the amount of radiation used.
WHEN WILL THE TREATMENT BE COMPLETE?
After the consultation appointment, most procedures are completed in one appointment. Following root canal treatment, you may need to return to your general dentist for a permanent restoration within 30 days.
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON RISKS INVOLVED?
As with any dental procedure, there is a small chance that an adverse event may occur. Treatment complications may include damage to crowns, bridges, or adjacent teeth; loss of tooth structure in gaining access to canals; instrument separation; perforations; adverse drug reactions; loss of sensation to part of the mouth; and post-operative pain and/or infection. As an endodontic specialist, Dr. LeCheminant is knowledgeable about the prevention and treatment of these complications.
WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES TO ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?
Alternatives include no treatment or extraction of the tooth. If a tooth requiring treatment is not either treated or extracted, pain and swelling will likely develop.
HOW SUCCESSFUL IS ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?
Studies report success rates of 90-95% when the treatment is performed by an endodontist. Although there is a very high degree of success, results cannot be guaranteed. Occasionally, a tooth which has had root canal treatment may require retreatment, surgery, or even extraction. Dr. LeCheminant will provide free follow-up exams to determine if any additional treatment will be necessary.
